It is with deep sadness that we report the death of Mr A.R.N Fry who sadly passed away on the Tuesday 19th October.
Affectionately known as Arnie, Mr Fry was one of the founding members of the Chippenham & District Sunday League along with Robbie Hughes, Den Wheeler and with assistance from both the Swindon Sunday Football League and Wiltshire County FA, they helped form the league way back in 1965.
The first secretary of the league was a Mrs Williams, but after moving away from area after a couple of months, Arnie took over the role of League Secretary, a post he held until 1981 as the league grew in numbers and went from strength to strength.
Always a very active member of the committee, Arnie who as well as being a qualified referee and officiating a number of matches in the Sunday League, he also occupied the role of Fixture Secretary and took up the position of League President from the mid 80’s all the way up until 2003.
One of just a few Life Members, Arnie will be sadly missed by all those who knew him, especially those of us who had the pleasure of working with him as part of the committee.
There is no doubt that had it not been for Arnie’s determination in those early days, there may not have been a Chippenham Sunday League as we know it.
All teams that played matches on Sunday 24th October took part in a minutes silence before kick off.
Arnie was also a long serving member of Chippenham RFC who along with Ron Highfield was instrumental in forming Chippenham Colts and was the Colts coach circa 1980-1986. He was Head Coach at Chippenham RFC and went on to Coach Dorset & Wilts U18’s and South West U18’s. Arnie also served as Dorset & Wiltshire RFU President 1999-2001.
His funeral is on the Thursday 11th November 2021 at 13.30 at Hullavington Church.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Arnie’s wife Eileen, son’s Timothy, Matthew, Jonathan and daughter Rachael and their immediate families.
